What is the difference between kill -15 and kill -9?

SIGTERM (15) asks the process to terminate; it can catch it, clean up and exit. SIGKILL (9) is handled by the kernel, cannot be caught or ignored, and gives no chance to clean up. Always try SIGTERM first.
